Magothy River

The Magothy River in Maryland extends 12.1 miles, through Anne Arundel County. It’s located south of the Patapsco River and North of the Severn River, from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, toward Gibson Island. The Magothy River’s tidal estuary portion is roughly 8 miles long, from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, South of Gibson Island. Magothy River tidal areas include Sillery Bay and Tar Cove, which border Gibson Island on the West.

In 1946, the Magothy River Association (MRA) was formed, when the U.S. Naval Academy wanted to use the Sandy Point Peninsula for a Naval training base. The land owners agreed to give the land to the State, provided the State build a park. This was one of the earliest examples of “Environmentalism” in our Nation.

This active, non-profit organization maintains and improves Magothy River water quality, wildlife, and plant life. MRA also provides knowledge and information on all aspects of aquatic life and river health. Magothy River Association’s stewardship enhances the quality of life for waterfront property owners and area residents looking to enjoy the beauty and activities along the Magothy River.

 

Living on the Magothy River

Many communities offer water privileges. These privileges can range from small community piers, to those with marinas and sandy beaches. Activities range from sailing, kayaking and fishing, to crabbing and water skiing in the summer sun.  Boating and fishing are also popular on the River.  Friendly river communities offer a small town, neighborly feel.  This gorgeous area consists of many wonderful neighborhoods featuring luxury and custom homes as well as more modestly priced waterfront real estate.  Most communities are located near major highway commute routes to Washington D.C., Baltimore and Annapolis.
